What Is Long-Term Care?
Long-term care (sometimes abbreviated as LTC) involves an assortment of services devised to meet a person's health or personal care needs throughout a long period of time. In addition to a room (shared or private), most common activities include skilled nursing care, bathing, dressing, grooming, providing meals, medication management, social and recreational activities and assistance in getting around. These services, commonly called “activities of daily living”, help seniors live as independently and safely as possible when they can no longer perform everyday activities on their own.
People often require long-term care, generally as they age and become frailer or when they develop a serious, ongoing health condition or disability. Long-term care is offered by various caregivers, and depending on a person's needs is typically provided in a 24-hour housing and supervision facility, such as a Skilled Nursing community or Assisted Living community.
